Keepsake Stories

For the same class that produced Petal Perfection and Chutes & Ladders: Fantasy Adventure, our final prompt was to make an educational game

Keepsake Stories: How Gluskabe Created Sugarloaf Mountain is an interactive picture book adaptation of a traditional folktale told by the Abenaki people of Vermont and Québec. This project emerged from a class prompt to make an educational game, so (as someone with a deep interest in both linguistics and Indigenous causes) I chose the preservation of Indigenous languages as my topic, and decided to create a way for kids to experience this story while also learning about the near-extinct Western Abenaki language. Throughout the book, readers will encounter certain words in Western Abenaki, and can hear their pronunciations and meanings, as well as using the words they learn to answer questions that help with their reading comprehension.
